What is Rugby in the Park?
Rugby in the Park is the Foundation's pilot
program that has been running in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The after-school
program and services are free and have been taking
place each week in three housing estate areas in South
Western Sydney - Airds, Claymore and Minto. Rugby
in the Park puts programs within reach of the
children and young people living in these areas,
providing them with opportunities to participate in
activities that many in society take for granted.
The program, which uses rugby to engage the young
people, also offers leadership opportunities, builds self esteem and community spirit, as well as
providing material support.

High
School students are trained to act as both
coaches and mentors to the younger
participants, building relationships that
assist in the transition to high school, and
provide positive role models. |
More than
500 children registered for Rugby in
the Park in the Campbelltown area during
2006, with between 35 and 70 participating
at each of the three locations every week.

All
participants receive afternoon tea including
fruit and a barbeque, ensuring they are
properly fed.
More than 75% of kids participating
report they previously had no physical or
structured after-school activity.

Many kids coming to the program demonstrate poor
discipline, poor behaviour and disrespect among one
another. Coach/mentors already report they have seen
a positive change in the kids with regard to self
confidence, teamwork, communication, respect,
playing fair and new skills.
Rugby in the
Park promotes education, positive values and
personal responsibility and assists in building
healthier children, families and neighbourhoods.
Local schools and communities will work with
the Foundation to identify youth who are truanting
and at the 'tipping point' to encourage them to
attend. The
Foundation has the ability to tailor the program to
fit the needs of any community, and a key goal is to
work with the community to ensure long-term
sustainable local ownership.
